About the role

Introduction

A growing business lender is seeking a Head of Credit to build and lead its credit function. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this hands-on role combines credit-framework design, underwriting and portfolio ownership across secured and unsecured SMME lending. This permanent role is based in Sandton, Johannesburg, with five days per week on-site.

Role Responsibilities

  • Design and implement the credit framework, including policies, procedures, documentation, approval mandates and governance structures.

  • Build scalable processes for secured and unsecured SMME lending and take ownership of credit decisions across the portfolio.

  • Develop commercially sound underwriting approaches that balance speed, risk and decision quality.

  • Own portfolio performance, monitor emerging risks and implement timely risk-mitigation measures.

  • Drive disciplined risk-based pricing and deal structuring, working with commercial teams to support responsible growth.

  • Help shape secured and unsecured lending products and improve workflows through process design, automation and system enhancements.

  • Build and develop a lean credit team and establish a culture of accountability and sound judgement.

  • Within the first 6–12 months, establish a documented credit framework, clear portfolio-risk visibility and faster, more consistent decision-making.

  • Develop a detailed understanding of the business through an intensive induction, progressing from learning its operations to managing and leading the credit function.

Experience Requirements

  • 4–8 years of credit experience, with strong exposure to SMME lending.

  • Hands-on experience in both secured and unsecured lending environments.

  • Experience operating in fast-paced or entrepreneurial businesses; experience building or improving credit processes is strongly preferred.

  • Strong credit judgement, analytical ability, commercial awareness and understanding of risk versus return.

  • Ability to build processes and documentation from first principles, make sound decisions with incomplete information and operate effectively under pressure.

  • A practical, accountable approach, with attention to detail, resilience and the ability to translate decisions into action.

Education Requirements

  • No specific formal qualification is stipulated in the brief. The stated requirements focus on relevant credit experience and demonstrated capability.
