About the role
Introduction
A fast-growing financial services business with an expanding footprint across Africa is looking for a hands-on Data Engineer to help shape its cloud data environment. This role suits someone who combines strong SQL discipline, a bias for performance, and practical Google Cloud Platform experience in a fast-moving, direct culture.
Role Responsibilities
You will design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and cloud-based data architecture that support analytics and decision-making across the business.
Build and optimise data pipelines using GCP services such as BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Storage
Develop ETL processes that transform raw data into clean, structured outputs for reporting and analysis
Partner with analysts and data scientists to understand requirements and deliver reliable data products
Document pipelines, data models, and architecture clearly for ongoing maintainability
Troubleshoot data issues quickly and take ownership of data quality and integrity
Continuously improve performance, scalability, and cost efficiency through better design and tuning
Automate repeatable workflows and processes where possible
Stay current on GCP tools, data engineering practices, and relevant industry developments
Experience Requirements
5+ years' experience in a Data Engineer or similar role
Highly fluent in SQL, including window functions, merge and incremental logic, and grain discipline
Strong hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially BigQuery
Proficiency in Python, ETL development, and data modelling
Strong awareness of performance, partitioning, clustering, and incremental processing
Comfortable reconciling outputs against known-correct figures and owning mistakes when numbers are wrong
Pragmatic, direct, and receptive to feedback without over-engineering solutions
Good judgement using AI tools as a productivity multiplier, with careful testing and verification
Financial services experience of at least 5 years
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field preferred
Equivalent practical experience and a strong track record may also be considered
