About the role

Introduction

A fast-growing financial services business with an expanding footprint across Africa is looking for a hands-on Data Engineer to help shape its cloud data environment. This role suits someone who combines strong SQL discipline, a bias for performance, and practical Google Cloud Platform experience in a fast-moving, direct culture.

Role Responsibilities

You will design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and cloud-based data architecture that support analytics and decision-making across the business.

Build and optimise data pipelines using GCP services such as BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Storage

Develop ETL processes that transform raw data into clean, structured outputs for reporting and analysis

Partner with analysts and data scientists to understand requirements and deliver reliable data products

Document pipelines, data models, and architecture clearly for ongoing maintainability

Troubleshoot data issues quickly and take ownership of data quality and integrity

Continuously improve performance, scalability, and cost efficiency through better design and tuning

Automate repeatable workflows and processes where possible

Stay current on GCP tools, data engineering practices, and relevant industry developments

Experience Requirements

5+ years' experience in a Data Engineer or similar role

Highly fluent in SQL, including window functions, merge and incremental logic, and grain discipline

Strong hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially BigQuery

Proficiency in Python, ETL development, and data modelling

Strong awareness of performance, partitioning, clustering, and incremental processing

Comfortable reconciling outputs against known-correct figures and owning mistakes when numbers are wrong

Pragmatic, direct, and receptive to feedback without over-engineering solutions

Good judgement using AI tools as a productivity multiplier, with careful testing and verification

Financial services experience of at least 5 years

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field preferred

Equivalent practical experience and a strong track record may also be considered
